Twin-Screw Extrusion Process
Pharmaceutical Twin-Screw Extruder for optimisation of drugs process development in Hot Melt Extrusion and Twin-Screw Granulation according to optimal GMP compliance.
This instrument allows to realise a Hot Melt Extrusion (HME) and a Continuous Granulation operation. This process provide a comprehensive formulation development platform for drug delivery and continuous processing projects.
The Twin-Screw Extruder allow the formulation of polymers implementation above their glass transition or their melting point and in order to mixing drugs, additives and matrix at molecular scale.
The process merge mixing and compressing of powders, liquids and pellets in order to obtain a homogenized product.
Technical specifications of the Pharma 16 Twin-Screw Extruder (Thermo Fisher):
The instrument is equipped with a twin-screw (16 mm diameter and 640 mm screw length). The throughput is from 0.5 to 5 kg/h and screw can rotate until 1000 rpm. The screws can be modulated according to the needed profile (mixing and conveyor zones can be adjusted as requested). The fully-ported, split twin-screw barrel with 8 individual heating and cooling zones, and up to 150 bars operational pressure ensures maximum flexibility in process design. The temperature of each heating zone can be up to 300°C.
The extruder is equipped to:
- a real sensitive torque sensor from 0.1N.m to 36 N.m;
- a single-screw weighing doser for pellets and powder with a feed ratio from 0.5 to 10 kg/h;
- a twin-screw weighing doser with a feed ratio from 50 g/h to 2.5 kg/h;
- a fluid pump which delivers a feed rate from 50 g/h to 2.5 kg/h;
- an air cooling conveyor to cool the extrudate;
- a pelletizer which can cut pellets with a length between 1 and 3 mm.
This equipment is available for R&D projects with industrial specifications in the pharmaceutical domain.
